We probably all have an image of traditional Japanese food as being expertly prepared by a mysterious man behind a low counter. In the Japanese way, we might expect that he had at least ten years of hard training under his belt before he was even allowed to call himself a chef. On the other hand, there is also the image of the loving mother waking up early to carefully prepare a “bento” lunch box for her family. Both of these images are indeed based on fact, but there is yet another side of the story. Japan has a long tradition of communal preparation of food, of the entire family or circle of friends sitting around assorted ingredients and preparing them and eating together, often from the same pot or dish. In a somewhat similar fashion to a BBQ in western countries, it is often the father who takes responsibility for leading, deciding when more heat is needed, when the ingredients should be added and so forth. Take this chance to enjoy a delicious dinner in the traditional family style while being guided by a professional. It makes a great story from your travels and who knows... you may learn enough to enjoy these dishes at your home in the future! |
